A Time of Tragedy

National Marrow Donor Program Continues Operations

On any given day, the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP) is in the process of collecting, transporting or transplanting at least 14 blood stem cell donations: marrow, blood stem cells and umbilical cord blood.

September 11, 2001, was no exception.

Since that day, the NMDP activated emergency systems and has been working around the clock to ensure that day-to-day operations continue so that no patients or donors adversely suffer from this terrorist attack on America.

  • We are deeply concerned for every single patient who is waiting for the arrival of their donated blood stem cells and are working very closely with their transplant centers.
  • We give honor to all of the people who are committed to helping others and selflessly continue to donate their marrow and blood stem cells - especially those who live in the New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania regions.
  • We are working with many outstanding people and organizations to ensure the delivery of donated blood stem cells to the many patients around the world.

In the following weeks, the NMDP will continue to deliver donated blood stem cells as quickly as possible as we anticipate delays in commercial air travel. Likewise, we will continue to work closely with all NMDP Network Centers who have donations, collections and transplants scheduled in the coming weeks.

With the help of contracted couriers, corporate partners and committed donors, each and every patient scheduled for transplant will get the donated blood stem cells they need.
