Shape the Future of the NMDPNMDP Seeking Nominations for Board
Now through May 1, 2002, the NMDP is accepting nominations for board members. Board members selected will serve a two-year term beginning January 1, 2003. See Nomination Guidelines for complete information on the nomination process.
Members Have Close Ties to the NMDPBoard members are motivated to serve by their close connections to the NMDP and its work. Transplant physicians and other health care professionals may serve because their professional experience is paired with strong personal commitment. Some board members have donated marrow or blood stem cells and were moved to become further involved. In addition, many board members are motivated to serve as a result of their experience as unrelated stem cell transplant patients or family members of patients. The latter group includes board member and chair of the Nominating Committee Robert D. Lorentz, Ph.D., whose son was a transplant patient. Lorentz says he serves on the board "to give something back to an organization that helped save my son's life." He wants to make sure that other people have the same access and opportunity his son did. In particular, he decided to serve on the board because he wanted to make sure patients and their concerns are well represented. Members Contribute Diverse Viewpoints"As chair of the Nominating Committee, I want to make sure all constituents' views are well represented," Lorentz explained. Constituents include patients and donors, transplant centers and donor centers, physicians, and the many other groups involved in the NMDP. The NMDP strives to maintain a board that represents its constituents' diverse needs. The board is composed of individuals from a variety of professional backgrounds, personal experiences, and racial and ethnic communities. Each member brings a distinct vision of how the NMDP can best pursue its mission.Lorentz points out that the board member role offers individuals the opportunity and responsibility to actively shape the direction of the NMDP: "We have to make sure it remains an effective organization, and being on the board, you have the opportunity to do that." Members Have an Exciting OpportunityThis is an exciting time to be involved in the planning and development of the NMDP. The NMDP has sharpened its focus and is committed to ambitious goals, including delivering search times in 21 days, achieving 90 % donor availability, and driving and directing stem cell therapy research. The board plays a strategic role in developing these goals. As chair of the Nominating Committee, Lorentz urges any interested individuals who feel they can contribute to consider volunteering for the board: "Here's an opportunity for people to do something that can help save lives and impact lots of people during a time when they face a life-threatening crisis. If you think you can contribute, we want to hear from you!"
