Rapper Nelly Launches Donor Recruitment Campaign

Superstar rapper Nelly and his sister Jackie Donahue are launching the Jes Us 4 Jackie campaign, a nationwide effort to bring attention to the need for marrow and blood stem cell donors. Jackie needs a marrow transplant and is searching for a donor. The Jes Us 4 Jackie campaign will help bring hope not only to Jackie, but to the many patients worldwide in need of a marrow or blood stem cell donor.

The Need for Donors

Each year more than 30,000 people are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases for which a marrow or blood stem cell transplant may offer the best hope for a cure. For patients like Jackie Donahue who do not have a matching donor in their family, finding a matched unrelated donor is their only hope. The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) maintains a registry of nearly 5 million potential donors-the largest and most diverse in the world. People on the Registry have volunteered to donate their marrow or blood stem cells to any patient, anywhere in the world.

Through the Jes Us 4 Jackie campaign, Nelly and Jackie hope to increase the number of donors on the National Marrow Donor Program Registry. Jes Us 4 Jackie plans to sponsor donor drives on June 21 in New York, St. Louis and Los Angeles.

The campaign will focus on recruiting more Black and African American donors and donors of mixed heritage.

A Need for Diversity

Because tissue types are inherited, much like hair or eye color, patients are more likely to find a matching donor within their own racial or ethnic groups. This creates the need to increase the diversity of the Registry to improve the chances for all patients to find a match. More Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, Hispanic or Latino potential volunteer donors and umbilical cord blood donors are needed.
