Donor and Recipient Meet

Making a Friend for Life

Calf Looking and Deborah White unite.Deborah White of San Rafael, Calif., joined the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Registry because she wanted to make a difference in someone's life.

White found out in person what a difference she made in the life of Patrick Calf Looking, a 41-year-old Blackfeet American Indian and father of four.

Calf Looking, from Browning, Mont., needed a volunteer marrow or blood stem cell donor for a transplant to help him overcome acute myelogenous leukemia. White became that donor, and a life-saving transplant was performed on July 19, 2000, at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Meeting for the First Time

The Missoulian, the Missoula, Mont., daily newspaper, captured the heart-rending first-time meeting of Calf Looking and White when White attended the University of Montana's graduation ceremonies in May 2003. Calf Looking received his Master of Science in organismal biology and ecology.
