2006. Honor Your Mother for Mother's Day2006. Donors Sought in Nationwide Recruitment EffortInformation on this topic is available in Spanish (PDF).
Say Thanks Mom! to your mother for the life that she gave to you by offering that same gift to someone else. Consider becoming a life-saving marrow donor by joining the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Registry during the Thanks Mom! Marrow Donor Drive. What better way to honor your mother? A nationwide campaign will be conducted Mother's Day weekend, May 12, 13 and 14, at more than 100 sites around the country. Donors are being sought by the NMDP and by the family of 9-year-old Kailee Wells, who recently received a marrow transplant after four years of searching for a suitably matched donor. Every day, NMDP donor centers and recruitment groups work to diversify the Registry, increasing the number of donors from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds to improve all patients' odds of finding a donor. Through continued efforts like Thanks Mom!, NMDP sees a day when every patient who needs a transplant has a donor -- just like Kailee now does. Other Event PartnersThe Marrow Foundation® (www.themarrowfoundation.org) and the National Association of Hospital Hospitality Houses (NAHHH) (www.nahhh.org) are supporting this initiative. The Marrow Foundation is the fund-raising partner of the NMDP. The National Association of Hospital Hospitality Houses offers a home-away-from-home for families whose loved ones are undergoing medical treatment.About the Wells FamilyOwen and Linda Wells, parents of 9-year-old transplant recipient Kailee, are helping organize the Thanks Mom! Marrow Donor Drive because they want to assist other families searching for committed marrow donors. The 4-year search for a donor ended in 2005 when a donor was found in China. Kailee was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia in January 2002 at age 5. "Whether your mother is 18 or 98, everyone has a mother and every mother wants a healthy, happy life for her child," said Linda. "What could be more meaningful for your mother than giving the gift of life for another mother's child?" Learn more about Kailee Wells online at www.kaileegetwells.com.
