The NMDP pays tribute to Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary

The National Marrow Donor Program^® (NMDP) honors the memory of Mary Travers. She died Wednesday night in Danbury Hospital in Connecticut.
 
Travers was diagnosed with leukemia in 2005 and received an unrelated donor bone marrow transplant to treat the cancer. The treatment enabled her to return to performing. A year later at one of her concerts, Travers met the woman who gave her a second chance at life.

"The NMDP is very appreciative of Mary’s work to raise awareness of marrow donation," said Dr. Jeffery Chell, CEO of the NMDP. "We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Mary’s husband, Ethan, and her two daughters."

After her transplant, Travers was in remission and continued performing until mid-2009, when her condition worsened.

Travers sang in the 1960s folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, known for such songs as "If I Had a Hammer," "Puff the Magic Dragon" and "Leaving on a Jet Plane.”
