Seattle Doctor Brings Donation Center PerspectiveNMDP Names Thomas Price, M.D., to Board of DirectorsMINNEAPOLIS -- March 18, 2002 Thomas H. Price, M.D., has joined the board of directors for the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP). Price is one of four new members who will serve on the NMDP board of directors. As an NMDP board member, Price hopes to provide additional Donor Center perspective to the board. "My goal is to support the active participation of Donor Centers in furthering the goals of the NMDP, particularly those related to improving the search process," said Price, executive vice president and medical director for Puget Sound Blood Center (PSBC) and professor of medicine at the University of Washington, both located in Seattle, Wash. Price has been an active and dedicated volunteer with the NMDP, serving on a number of task forces and as the medical director of the NMDP's Donor Center at PSBC since 1990. Also, he has served as chairman of the NMDP Membership and Process Improvement Committee, and as a member of both the Standards Committee and the Donor and Patient Safety Monitoring Committee. Price received a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. and an M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. Price completed his postgraduate training at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.; the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.; and the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash. The National Marrow Donor Program is the international leader in the facilitation of unrelated marrow and blood stem cell transplantation. Based in Minneapolis, Minn., the non-profit organization facilitates unrelated marrow and blood stem cell transplants for patients with life-threatening diseases who do not have matching donors in their families. Since 1986, the NMDP has facilitated more than 13,000 unrelated stem cell transplants for patients with blood disorders, such as leukemia and aplastic anemia, as well as certain immune system and genetic disorders.
