Transplant Center Experience

The amount of experience a transplant center has may be a factor when you are choosing a transplant center. You can find out what kind of experience National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) transplant centers in the United States have in our online transplant center listings.

Ages of patients treated

Look in each U.S. transplant center listing under Program Type to learn if a center transplants only adults, only pediatric patients or both.

Number of transplants

Look under Transplant Experience for more detailed information about a specific transplant center's experience — including cord blood transplant experience.

Transplant Experience shows the year the transplant center began doing allogeneic transplants, as well as the year the center became an NMDP transplant center. (An allogeneic transplant is a bone marrow or cord blood transplant using cells from a relative or an unrelated donor.)

Transplants performed

Look under Transplants Performed to see the total number of different types of transplants the center has performed:
  • Allogeneic bone marrow, peripheral blood (PBSC) and cord blood transplants
  • Autologous transplants (which use the patient's own cells)
  • Total number of transplants within the most recent one-year period on record (June 2006 - May 2007)

The Transplant Experience section also includes a Center-Specific Analysis. For help understanding this analysis, see How to Understand Transplant Center Statistics.

Disease- and age-specific experience

Each U.S. transplant center listing also provides information about the center's experience with specific diseases and age groups. This experience is listed in the Survival by Patient Diagnosis and Age section.
