Faculty

Margaret R. O'Donnell, M.D., Associate Clinical Director, Division of Hematology and Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation, City of Hope National Medical Center, Duarte, California

Program Description

The treatment of adult acute myelogenous leukemia continues (AML) to evolve with new therapies and advances in our understanding of treatment algorithms. This program describes strategies to improve survival rates based on clinical trials comparing treatment options for patients with AML (chemotherapy, autologous and allogeneic transplantation). Dr. O'Donnell will provide practical information for decision-making in patient selection for each option.

Goal

The goal of this activity is to describe patient selection for hematopoietic cell transplantation versus other therapies in order to improve long-term outcomes.

Learning Objectives

  • Define prognostic indicators for patients at increased risk for disease recurrence.
  • Describe the recent therapeutic advances in AML.
  • Discuss the importance of residual disease monitoring as a guide to different treatment strategy or consideration for hematopoietic cell transplantation.
  • List advances in hematopoietic cell transplantation for AML and factors influencing the outcome of this option.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for hematologists, oncologists and other health professionals who are involved in the treatment of patients with AML.

Accreditation and Certification

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the:
