Program Description

The treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) has received much attention recently as more has been learned about prognostic indicators and biologic features of the disease, and recent developments on new agents have provided new therapeutic options. H. Joachim Deeg, M.D. will examine the emerging data and provide insight into current treatment strategies, including transplantation: Which risk factors are critical to assess when choosing a therapy? Are there sub-groups for whom there is a standard first-line treatment? How do emerging therapies impact our decision-making for transplantation? How should treatment decisions be affected by age of the patient and quality-of-life issues?

Goal

The goal of this activity is to describe appropriate therapeutic strategies for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS).

Learning Objectives

  • Describe advances in classification systems and impact on treatment decisions
  • Explain current clinical evidence for treatment strategies, including timing of therapy choices, by patient risk sub-groups
  • List the elements of a successful treatment plan when transplantation is an option
  • Describe recent advances in the treatment of older patients, including reduced-intensity transplantation
  • Recognize the importance of quality-of-life issues in decision-making

Target Audience

This activity is intended for hematologists, oncologists and other health professionals who are involved in the treatment of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia.

Accreditation and Certification

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the:
  • Medical College of Wisconsin
  • National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP)
  • Center for International Blood & Marrow Transplant Research TM (CIBMTR)

The Medical College of Wisconsin is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
