70% of patients who need a transplant do not have a fully matched donor in their family. If you don’t have a match in your family, your doctor will search the NMDP Registry to find a matched unrelated donor or cord blood unit for you.

When doctors search our registry, they search more than 41 million potential adult donors and nearly 811,000 cord blood units on U.S. and global registries.

Thousands of new donors are being added to the registry each month. Doctors searching the registry receive daily updates on the progress of donor searches. Your doctors are notified if a new donor is added who matches you. Our goal is to help your doctor find you the best match in the shortest time.

“The search moved quickly, but for me it seemed like an eternity. To this day I am amazed and in awe of someone who would donate their cells to save the life of a complete stranger.”
- Michael, transplant recipient
